Robert Schalkenbach Foundation (RSF) takes its name from an American typesetter and enthusiastic advocate of Henry George’s vision whose bequest provided the seed money to start the Foundation in 1925 for “teaching, expounding, and propagating” Georgist ideas and principles. RSF is a private operating foundation with a mission to provide solutions integrating concerns for economic, social and environmental justice, poverty, and government-granted privileges. As a growing number of people confront the need to allocate access to the gifts of nature fairly, peacefully, and efficiently, the ideas of Henry George have gained a new relevance.

With an active Board of Directors of 21 members across North American time zones and assets of more than $17 million fueling a typical annual operating budget of $700,000, RSF is a prominent voice dedicated to the promulgation of George’s economic theories. Embracing wide-ranging perspectives and interpretations, the Foundation is an international leader in Georgist communities. To promote public awareness of the social philosophy and economic reforms promoted by George, the Foundation conducts research, publishes the works of Henry George and new works that advance core principles, and advocates for more just and efficient taxation at the local, state, and national levels. The Foundation also provides office services to support the American Journal of Economics and Sociology.

Position Summary
RSF’s Executive Director is responsible for: 1) working in partnership with the Board of Directors to advance the Foundation’s mission and vision and to ensure the sustainability of this private operating foundation; 2) creating and implementing a strategic management plan that carries out current and future RSF goals and initiatives; 3) serving as the public face of the organization and as its chief advocate and promoter throughout the Georgist and other relevant communities; 4) promoting the continuous improvement of program, strategy, staff, and volunteers in service of the mission; and 5) assuring RSF’s financial viability through all sources invested, earned, and contributed. The Executive Director is instrumental to setting the tone for collaboration, respect, and professionalism throughout the organization, and ensures that RSF’s mission remains paramount in the organization’s activities and decision making.

Working Relationships
Reports To:  Board of Directors
Direct Reports: Manages small staff as well as contractors on an as needed basis.

Location
RSF’s headquarters are in New York City. The Foundation is willing to explore the possibility of a remote working relationship and may consider moving its headquarters at some time in the future.

Job Responsibilities Include:
Board Governance:
Responsible for leading RSF in a manner that supports and guides the Foundation’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors. Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions.

Financial Performance and Viability:
Responsible for guiding professional oversight of the Foundation’s assets develops and manages resources sufficient to ensure RSF’s financial health and sustainability. Responsible for the fiscal integrity of the Foundation, including submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and accurate monthly statements. Responsible for fiscal management within the approved budget that ensures maximum resource utilization and maintenance of the Foundation in a positive financial position.

Organization Mission and Strategy:
Works with Board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, research, publishing, advocacy, and outreach. Responsible for partnering with the Board on strategic planning to ensure future sustainability. Responsible for the enhancement of Foundation’s image by being visible and by working closely with partners and other programs/projects.

Organization Operations.
Oversees and commits resources to ensure that the operations of the Foundation are appropriate and effective. Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff. Responsible for signing all notes, agreements, and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the Foundation.

Qualifications
• Fluency in and commitment to Georgist principles and philosophies
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in a relevant field preferred, including social sciences, policy analysis, or nonprofit management
• 5 to 10 years’ experience (supervisory or leadership experience preferred) with non-profits either as a volunteer or in a staff capacity
• Proven ability to work with and motivate a Board of Directors and staff
• Proven capacity to influence, appeal to and work in collaboration with partner organizations and a diverse constituency
• Proven success in advocacy or marketing
• Ability to provide oversight to financial planning preferred

Work Environment
• Full-Time Salaried (commensurate with experience); typically 40 hours per week – may work more around peak times, projects, events, conferences and deadlines
• Ability to work flexible hours, including attendance at evening board and board committee meetings
